M T 125 ORGANIZACIJA ZNANJA 2012, LETN. 17, ZV. 3 seminarjev in predavanj. Klju~ne besede vaška knjižnica, nove knjižnične storitve, kmetovalci, projekt AgroLib-Ja Abstract The paper presents the situation in Serbian village libraries. It also points out that these libraries do not keep pace with the development of library and information activities in Serbia and that among their users, similar to those in public libraries in cities, there is only a small number of farmers. Based on data from surveys and questionnaires to investigate the farming population of the village municipality Jagodina (Serbia), it was established that agricultural producers needed to undergo drastic changes. In Serbian villages, the majority of farmers do not have computers or Internet access, and due to poor economic situation they do not have the possibility to get any professional training, or to visit fairs, seminars and lectures. Public library "Radislav Nikčević" from Jagodina recognised the opportunity for a village library to play an active role in making a difference to the local community. The need for modernisation of agricultural production created a need to modernise libraries in a rural area. Influenced by the model of a modern library, the Public Library "Radislav Nikčević" in Jagodina created in 2010 the concept of a modern village library and revitalised four village libraries in the municipality of Jagodina thanks to the funding provided by the non-governmental organisation EIFL (Electronic Information for Library) which supports innovative ideas of librarians in the developing countries. The interior of these libraries was modernised, current and recently published general literature and literature on agriculture purchased, and the Internet set up. Workshops for children and literary evenings were organised, and, depending on the needs and interests of the farming population, organised as well were lectures on agriculture. In addition, ICT training was organised for both village librarians and farmers. The aim of the Agrolib-Ja (Agricultural Libraries in Jagodina) project was to promote village libraries as the information and communication centre of the local community, which, beside traditional library services, also quickly and efficiently provide assistance to farmers to get to the desired information on subsidies and state projects, as well as to newspapers and incentives on agricultural production. The www.agrolib.rs/pijaca (AgroLib Market) Website enables these farmers to buy and sell products online. The ultimate goal of the project, however, was to improve the social and economic status of farmers.
